Agribusiness Succession to Survival – and Now, Growth

Date: 12 November 2025

When I first started working with Belinda and Phil Tongue at Llanillo Ag Co. in Tamworth, NSW, I saw firsthand the challenges that come with running a cattle and sheep property – especially during times of transition and adversity. Seven years ago, Belinda and Phil faced one of the most complex transitions in farming: family succession. While their family had worked with Roberts + Morrow for many years, stepping out independently and taking full ownership of the business was a daunting prospect, made even tougher by the onset of a severe drought.

That period was truly a baptism by fire for the Tongue’s. Starting out solo, the drought hit hard. But with our support at Roberts + Morrow, Belinda, Phil and the family got through it. I’m proud to say that not only did they survive those trying times – they’ve grown since then.

Building a Strong Support Team
One of the most impactful decisions Belinda and Phil made was to build a trusted team around them. With our guidance, they brought together a reliable network including their bank manager, solicitor, and financial advisors. Having a brilliant team behind them made all the difference. It gave the Tongue’s the confidence to put their business plan into action safely and efficiently.

We played a key role in keeping the Tongue’s informed about available grants and programs, particularly through the Rural Assistance Authority (RAA). These resources were vital during the drought and in the recovery phase, helping them rebuild and drought-proof their operation. We also assisted when they purchased an additional property post-drought, helping structure the transaction to maximise tax benefits and asset management, ensuring the expansion was financially sound.

Navigating Tech and Complexity with Confidence
Like many regional farmers, Belinda and Phil found the increasing reliance on technology to be a source of stress. I know that not everyone is a tech wizard, but having our team there to help with ever-changing requirements made things much easier. Whether it was managing MYOB challenges or understanding new compliance rules, Belinda found peace of mind knowing they had someone to talk to – someone who understood both the technical and practical sides of farming.

When asked what they valued most about working with us, Belinda didn’t hesitate: “The people. From Tanya at the front desk to Nidhi who patiently helps with MYOB, and especially Matt – he’s a delight to work with and a great sounding board for all our ideas and challenges.” It’s this personal connection, combined with professional expertise, that makes our partnership so meaningful.

Lessons Learned: Trust, Teamwork, and Staying Informed
Through this journey, I’ve learned that succession is tough, but doable with the right support. A strong team is essential – bankers, solicitors, and advisors who understand your goals. Staying informed about grants, programs, and compliance changes is critical. And while technology can be daunting, you don’t have to go it alone.

With the ever-changing world of money, technology, and government requirements, you need great people who live and breathe the industry on your side. That’s what we strive to be for our clients – trusted partners who help them plan for the future with confidence.

  • Succession is tough, but doable with the right support.
  • A strong team is essential – bankers, solicitors, and advisors who understand your goals.
  • Stay informed about grants, programs, and compliance changes.
  • Don’t be afraid of tech, but don’t go it alone either.
