Nidhi Avasthi

As part of our Inspiring Women series, we had the pleasure of talking to Nidhi Avasthi. An accountant based in the Tamworth office, Nidhi is originally from India and has an interesting story to share. We loved hearing her great tips and advice for navigating a career working in a new country.

What has been your career journey so far?
I am originally from India, where I was born and studied a Masters in Commerce. I moved to Melbourne in 2011, where I could continue my studies in accounting and eventually found work as an accountant with Roberts & Morrow in Tamworth, NSW – I have been here for nine years now! I took on the role of Supervisor, as I wanted to diversify my skills, especially in the area of leadership. It is my dream one day to own my own business.

What made you decide to take a career path in accounting?
I came from a family of accountants and bankers and decided to continue in this field. I like accounting because a professional accountant in business can be a vital asset for local businesses and contributes to the overall stability and progress of society.

In your accounting career, were there any mentors who have helped you grow along the way?
I have been fortunate to have met and worked with some lovely people. I have always been encouraged and supported by the Roberts & Morrow Tamworth Partner’s to step further into my career. Matt McCulloch noticed my interest in accounting software and provided the opportunity to work on some projects. Tanya Bagster, who is a Partner at the firm and an excellent accountant, is now my current mentor. She has been a great role model in how to handle both family and work at the same time. I have also learned a lot from her about business management, leadership and delegating.

Do you feel that accounting is a good career choice for women?
It is good choice, with lots of flexibility, particularly for women studying or raising families. Technology advancement, flexible working hours and working from home policies have made this all possible!

What led you to move to Australia?
After my marriage I moved to Australia with my husband, who was already settled here.

What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered living abroad, and how have you overcome them?
India and Australia, of course, are very different, but the challenges of living and working in a new environment and meeting different kinds of people have been very rewarding. For example, when I first moved to Tamworth, I came across slang terms like ‘fair dinkum’, I overcame the challenge with this new language by asking my colleagues for clarification. Australians, in general, are very lovely and helpful. I have found with the support of a community and specific individuals, and a positive, problem solving attitude, most challenges when living abroad can be solved.

What is the best way to start the day?
I like to have some time to myself. I usually sit/walk in my garden for 10-15 minutes in the morning.

What is unique about the place you grew up?
My Family! And many festive occasions in a year.

What holiday destination would you most like to go to?
Switzerland and more places around Australia.

Where would you spend all your time if you could?
The beach. Whitehaven Beach, Queensland.

What have you created that you are most proud of?
I would have to say my home. It was my dream to have my own home.

Thank you Nidhi!
