Overseas Employment + HELP Debt

Date: 18 February 2026

Do you have a HELP Debt or a training support loan and are planning to move overseas for employment? If your answer is yes, then there are a few requirements that you need to complete with the Australian Taxation Office before you leave.

There are 2 major requirements that need to be lodged. They are an Overseas Travel Notification, and you need to report your worldwide income.

This applies to the following loans:
• HELP (Higher Education Loan Program – previously known as HECS)
• VET Student Loans
• Australian Apprenticeship Support Loan (previously know as Trade Support Loan)

Overseas Travel Notification
If you are planning to leave Australia for more than 183 days or 12 months you must submit an Overseas Travel Notification within seven (7) days after leaving Australia.
You will need to provide the following information:
• Type of passport, passport number, date of issue and expiry
• Main country of residence whilst overseas
• Expected/actual date of departure and return to Australia
This form can be found and lodged on your MyGov account or contact Roberts + Morrow.

Worldwide Income
If your worldwide income is above $13,608 (AUD) for the 2024-25 year, you will need to report your income. To work out this amount, there are three (3) methods which you can use. They are as follows:
• Simple self-assessment method
• Overseas assessed method
• Comprehensive tax-based assessment method

Find more details about the above methods or any other information click here

You can report your worldwide income through your MyGov account; however, this must be lodged by 31 October of the relevant tax year.

If your worldwide income exceeds the minimum loan repayment thresholds you will be required to make a repayment of your loan and an assessment of this will be sent to you.

Roberts + Morrow team can assist in lodging your worldwide income tax return.
