Three Major Workforce Changes

Date: 27 August 2024

On August 26, new workplace laws came into effect as part of the Closing Loopholes reforms. Here’s what you need to know.

The right to disconnect is one of three changes that became law on 26 August.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Casual Employment: Learn about updates to how casual work is defined, pathways to permanent employment, and the responsibilities of both employees and employers.
  • Right to Disconnect: Employees will now have the right to refuse work-related contact outside their official hours, unless the refusal is deemed unreasonable. Note that this change will not apply to small businesses until August 26, 2025.
  • Independent Contractor Rules: Understand the changes for independent contractors, including the new definition of employment, unfair contract terms and minimum standards for employee-like workers.
